Eastern Basin Muskellunge
Project Title
Movement and Distribution of Muskellunge in the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie
Project Code
EBMSK
Project Duration
November 2024 - November 2029
Project Description
The Lake Erie Management Unit [MNR] has partnered with Muskies Canada to implant Muskellunge in the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie with acoustic transmitters. The purpose of this program is to learn more about the movement, spawning patterns, and habitat use of Muskellunge in this region. An initial area of focus for the program is Long Point Bay, Lake Erie. A population of Muskellunge are known to exist in this area; however, traditional survey techniques have failed to effectively sample this population. A targeted effort was needed to better understand this species and provide information that could aid in population management. The 2024 season involved a pilot project to determine feasibility of future tagging efforts.
