Eastern Lake Ontario Black Bass
Project Title
Movements of black bass in the Bay of Quinte, eastern Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River
Project Code
ELOBB
Project Duration
June 2015 - June 2029
Project Description
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are a popular game species for catch and release tournaments in Ontario. Tournaments are held from multiple locations in the Bay of Quinte, eastern Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River, which all exert heavy fishing pressure on the area. Due to the nature of tournaments, fish are displaced long distances (up to 200 km) multiple times per year, and the effects of this displacement are relatively unknown. The purpose of this project is to better understand the natural movements of these species and how they respond to long distance displacement in the Great Lakes system. Additionally, we are using fine scale positioning systems to examine various behaviours.
