Hamilton Harbour Lake Ontario Multi-species
Project Title
Multi-species fish telemetry in an Area of Concern, Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario
Project Code
HAMLO
Project Duration
August 2015 - August 2023
Project Description
The monitoring of fish and wildlife habitat restoration efforts is a large part of the final stage of the Great Lakes' Areas of Concern delisting process. Here in Hamilton Harbour, we are using acoustic telemetry to monitor how various fish species (of various trophic levels) are using these newly restored habitats and areas of low Dissolved Oxygen. The tracking of stocked and now sexually mature Walleye (Sander vitreus), a native and previously extirpated predator, may also provide some indication of spawning efforts within the harbour, the first step in assessing natural recruitment and therefore the success and longevity of these stocking efforts.
