Lake Erie Cisco
Project Title
Monitoring survivability and habitat use of tagged cisco in Lake Erie
Project Code
LECIS
Project Duration
May 2021 - May 2022
Project Description
The USGS Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Sciences and USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, worked with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to release 100 acoustically tagged cisco (Coregonus artedi) into Lake Erie on May 3, 2021. This included the release of 50 cisco in the East Basin near Dunkirk, NY and 50 cisco in the West Basin near Huron, OH. Surgically implanted transmitters will provide fish survivability and habitat-use information, which is critical for understanding the feasibility of restoration for the once prevalent Lake Erie cisco.
