Lake Erie Yellow Perch
Project Title
Understanding the spatial and temporal movements of Lake Erie Yellow Perch
Project Code
LEYEP
Project Duration
May 2018 - December 2019
Project Description
Yellow perch are an important fish species in the Lake Erie ecosystem and support valuable fisheries throughout the lake; however, little is known about their movement patterns. Traditional mark-recapture studies based on fishery-dependent information suggests yellow perch are capable of making large-scale movements seasonally, but a comprehensive tagging study has not been conducted to date. The goal of this study is to determine if it is feasible to capture and surgically implant acoustic transmitters in yellow perch so biologists can utilize the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System to gain a better understanding of the spatio-temporal behavior and ecology of this ecologically and economically important species.
